Se · Extraverted Sensation

contextual perception

attitude · yin
mode · yin
source · yin
Kūn · Earth

Takes the world at its word. The object comes in whole, in its own colors and weight, and Se (present contact) trusts what it shows: contact without translation.

Perceives things exactly as they are in the here and now: direct realism, no color or fluff added. Realism: actively making the most of the immediate, sensuous, and pronounced facts to get pure clarity in the moment.

Extraverted Sensation card

Shape

Drives

  • Meet reality on its own terms: 'this is how it is', publicly accessible to anyone who looks
  • Seize opportunities as they arise; adapt in real time
  • Press experience upon the senses: the big splash as demonstration of truth
  • Refine sensation to its highest intensity, ranging from direct physical pleasure to cultivated aesthetic taste.

Values

  • realness
  • practical effect
  • presence and nerve
  • the beauty of actual experience
  • freedom from hindrance (not freedom as abstract law)

Fears

  • Being trapped in deliberation while the moment passes
  • Abstractions that replace actual experience
  • Hairsplitting distinctions that delay action and waste time
  • A life with no intensity: 'the unexciting life is not worth living'

Gifts

  • Reads the physical situation fast and accurately, but can underweight long-term consequences.
  • Acts decisively under pressure, sometimes before the pause that would have helped.
  • Commands attention in company; presence can slide into performance.
  • Puts ideas into motion immediately, but can abandon them just as fast.

Costs

  • Takes things too much as it finds them: fragmentary perception mistaken for the whole (Columbus insisting he found Asia)
  • Relies on appeal to the stone (argumentum ad lapidem): kicks the stone and calls it a refutation.
  • Drawn to sensuality and whatever carries the greatest momentary presence.
  • Miscalculates the audience: pushes a stunt one step too far.

Not to be confused with

  • Si: Se (present contact) perceives the individual instance passing by; Si (the archive) perceives the archetypal sensation it relates to. Se trusts the given; Si mistrusts it until checked against the archive. Se undergoes experiences, Si catalogues them.
  • Ne: Se (present contact) reaches the highest pitch of actuality, Ne (possibility) the widest range of possibility; Se trusts what is presented, Ne is inquisitively skeptical of it; one reality vs many angles.
  • Te: Both are matter-of-fact, but Se (present contact) adapts and experiences while Te (execution) structures and implements; direct perception vs direct judgment.

The five named positions

What this function becomes in the five named positions. The other three pairings appear in the hexagram readings below.

  • At the Dominant: At the dominant position (for ESFP and ESTP): life is direct coordination with the world: see, then act. Deliberation is treated as an obstacle to clear.
  • At the Auxiliary: At the auxiliary position (for ISFP and ISTP): the daily return of an inward dominant to the world. The hands, the material, the present case; the principle or the ideal becomes real through contact, one ordinary session at a time.
  • At the Inspiring: At the inspiring position (for ENTJ and ENFJ): this function's register is hungered for naively, admired in others, reached for without native skill, and received as a call the ego did not author rather than wielded as a tool.
  • At the Nemesis: At the nemesis position (for INTP and INFP): the raw immediacy the exploratory types refuse, the binge and the spectacle, the body's claim treated as distraction. Contained, it grounds; fed, sensation swallows the harder work.
  • At the Primitive: For Ni-dominants, Se (present contact) is the lost art of the body and the present: neglected upkeep, Marx's chaotic apartment, then sudden crude sensuality or compulsive fact-grubbing under stress.

Under pressure

For Ni-dominants, Se (present contact) is the lost art of the body and the present: neglected upkeep, Marx's chaotic apartment, then sudden crude sensuality or compulsive fact-grubbing under stress. Repressed intuition asserts itself as projections: 'the wildest suspicions arise; jealous fantasies and anxiety states'; phobias and compulsion symptoms with 'a markedly unreal character, a frequent moral or religious streak': reason becomes hair-splitting pedantry, morality dreary moralizing and blatant Pharisaism, religion ridiculous superstition, and intuition 'descends to the lowest level of human meanness'. Takes things too much as it finds them: fragmentary perception mistaken for the whole (Columbus insisting he found Asia). Relies on appeal to the stone (argumentum ad lapidem): kicks the stone and calls it a refutation.

The motion (expansion · Si → Se)

Given a traditional description, how does it compare with its real-life manifestations?

Across the sixteen

Every type places Se somewhere; the position decides what it becomes. Each pairing is its own hexagram, with its own card and reading. In any position, Se can fail toward too much control or too little; the loop between the two is on the model page.

  • Hexagram 11, Peace
    Dominant · 11 · PeaceSe · ESFP + ESTP

Present contact (Se) sits in the dominant position for ESFP and ESTP. The actual room, the live moment, and the real situation govern their behavior. They dismiss abstractions so their inner drive and the outer world actively mingle, meeting the day while this passing season lasts.

  • Hexagram 36, Darkening of the Light
    Sub-dominant · 36 · Darkening of the LightSe · ISFJ + ISTJ

Present contact (Se) sits in the sub-dominant position for ISFJ and ISTJ, directly under their dominant archive (Si). As in hexagram 36, Darkening of the Light, they use outward engagement to deliberately veil their inner clarity.

  • Hexagram 24, Return (The Turning Point)
    Auxiliary · 24 · Return (The Turning Point)Se · ISFP + ISTP

In hexagram 24, Return, present contact (Se) sits in the auxiliary position for ISFP and ISTP. Connecting their inward dominant to the physical world is draining work that follows a natural cycle: engagement, depletion, rest, and return.

  • Hexagram 15, Modesty
    Sub-auxiliary · 15 · ModestySe · ESFJ + ESTJ

Present contact (Se) sits in the sub-auxiliary position for ESFJ and ESTJ. Like a mountain willingly placing itself under the plain, skepticism humbles itself beneath unvarnished reality, reducing over-reliance on the archive (Si) to augment simple acceptance of what is present.

  • Hexagram 46, Pushing Upward
    Inspiring · 46 · Pushing UpwardSe · ENTJ + ENFJ

Present contact (Se) sits in the inspiring position for ENTJ and ENFJ. In hexagram 46, Pushing Upward, the drive to engage with the present moment emerges outside their long-view mode as a slow, steady ascent they admire but do not natively possess.

  • Hexagram 19, Approach
    Nemesis · 19 · ApproachSe · INTP + INFP

In hexagram 19, Approach, present contact (Se) sits in the nemesis position for INTP and INFP. Raw bodily immediacy slowly moves in to disrupt their conceptual and value work, presenting a time-bounded temptation disguised as groundedness.

  • Hexagram 2, The Receptive
    Primitive · 2 · The ReceptiveSe · INTJ + INFJ · doubled

Present contact (Se) sits in the primitive position for INTJ and INFJ. It is the faculty they take most for granted: the given world their vision must learn to follow. The long-term reading tries to lead, while what the day actually offers goes unattended.

  • Hexagram 7, The Army
    Catalyst · 7 · The ArmySe · ENTP + ENFP

Present contact (Se) sits in the catalyst position for ENTP and ENFP. They prefer to keep their options open, but circumstances periodically force them to marshal their scattered possibilities into a single disciplined force and engage the immediate physical reality.

Spotting

In the room

  • Notices and names physical details others miss (fit, light, sound, timing)
  • Moves toward action fast; learns by doing, not by reading first
  • Physically at ease; takes calculated physical and social risks
  • Refines sensory details around them: food, sound, tools, surroundings
  • Performs: tells stories with impact, commands everyone's attention

Sounds like

  • Concrete, present-tense, vivid narration; specifics over generalities
  • 'It is what it is', 'look at what's actually happening', 'just do it'
  • Impatient with hypotheticals: 'we'll deal with that when it happens'
  • Demonstrates rather than explains; shows the thing itself
  • Punchy, unhedged assertions: obvious to anyone who cared to look

Says

  • Stop theorizing. Come look at it.
  • We watched it happen. That settles it.
  • You can plan for a year or find out in an afternoon.
  • I saw the gap and took it.
  • Details later; the window is open now.

How to probe for it

  • Ask how they learn something new. Se (present contact) gets hands on it immediately.
  • Ask about their best day. Se (present contact) describes sensory-rich, high-intensity lived experience.
  • Present an abstract model. Se (present contact) asks for the real example or the demo.
  • Ask how they handle sudden change. Se (present contact) lights up; improvisation is the comfort zone.

Points toward it

  • Rich sensory detail in stories
  • Restlessness during long abstract discussion
  • History of spontaneous decisions taken cheerfully
  • Reads physical environments instantly

Points away from it

  • Wants precedent before acting: suggests Si (the archive)
  • Spins the situation into ten hypotheticals: suggests Ne (possibility)
  • Prefers the map to the territory: suggests Ni (the long reading) or Ti (strict definition)

In the first person

  • I'm most alive when responding to what's actually in front of me: the real room, the real moment.affinity
  • I'd rather go find out by doing than sit and model it first.affinity
  • I catch the room as it actually is: what moved, what changed, how the light falls.affinity
  • I trust what I can see, touch, and test right now over any forecast.affinity
  • Being stuck where nothing can be touched, changed, or acted on is unbearable to me.aversion
  • I've paid for acting on what was in front of me without asking what it meant or where it led.stress
