Eleven people sit at a Birmingham dinner table in 1963, where the host has spent forty minutes reading the room as a single body: the journalist's caution, the students seeking permission to give their twenties to the work, the frightened sixteen-year-old who is the group's true center of gravity tonight. He answers all of them at once through one story about a bus driver, told slowly, chosen because it touches every question present. He tells no one what to think, but he gathers them all.
The eight positions
The eight positions show how this type arranges the eight functions: the positions are the same for every type, with a different function in each. Each cell carries its full reading.
The eight positions in one line
Every type fills the same eight positions with the eight functions, one each. The position decides what a function becomes: the dominant runs all day; the auxiliary is the effortful visible skill; the inspiring is hungered for and must be received from outside; the nemesis is met with resentment and contained, not fed; the primitive is taken for granted until it erupts; the catalyst returns every few years as the same lesson in new clothes.
Eight cognitive functions in eight positions. Each pairing is a hexagram: function trigram over position trigram. Each cell carries its full reading; the shared-with label names the other type with the same hexagram. Each pairing can also go wrong in two opposite ways, toward too much control or too little; the readings state both, and the loop between them is on the model page.
The classical picture is a lake risen all the way to heaven: accumulated waters about to break downward in one decisive release.
Going well: Handled well, accumulated warmth is shared rather than hoarded: the standing impasse is named and broken for everyone's sake, joining firmness to friendliness.
Inflation (too much control): Gone rigid, the break turns to enforcement: social capital is wielded as a weapon, harmony is forced onto the group, and dissent is cast out.
Abdication (too little control): Gone slack, the lake never rises: mood is managed instead of truth told, and the group is kept pleasant but never led.

The classical picture is flame rising to meet the open sky: fellowship formed in the open rather than in private factions.
Going well: Handled well, private conviction acts as a universal standard. This inner clarity organizes the clans and ensures their outward warmth creates true fellowship in the open.
Bolt (too much control): Gone rigid, the private conviction overrides the public warmth: preferences harden into factions, and the fellowship narrows to one loyal clan.
Drift (too little control): Gone slack, the inner conviction fails to provide a central harmonizing principle. Warmth is performed without clarity, lacking the universal concern needed to draw people together.

The classical picture is lightning and thunder together, a jaw biting through an obstruction so the teeth can meet: clarity and force applied to the same blockage.

Wall (too much control): Gone rigid, the insight seals into private clarity: the mind illuminates the obstruction but never applies the force to bite through it, leaving the shared purpose blocked.
Counterfeit (too little control): Gone slack, the strike becomes mere performance: dramatic pronouncements illuminate nothing the work needs, or hit allies instead of obstacles.

The classical picture is thunder passing over the mountain, a bird flying too high: small crossings succeed where great ones would fail.
Going well: Handled well, small tangents enrich the main line without disrupting it. The flying bird remains below, meaning adjacent options are checked carefully and small tasks are managed well.
Understudy (too much control): Walled off, no modest lateral option ever enters. The focus strives upward and narrows until it cannot adapt.
Spill (too little control): Overrun, the bird flies too high. Half-formed tangents become active initiatives, and the strategy fragments.

The classical picture is wood growing up through the earth: ascent by steady growth rather than force.
Going well: Handled well, the long arc touches ground daily: small embodied engagements pile up until the vision stands in the actual world.
Estrangement (too much control): When refused, the strategy is never applied. The insight remains a hidden seed that never pushes upward into the present moment.

The classical picture is the lake giving up water to feed the mountain above it: voluntary decrease, offered in the right measure.
Going well: Handled well, precedent is managed through intentional reduction. The personality offers the two small bowls as a minimal but sincere tribute, paying just enough attention to tested practice to satisfy the claim.
Feud (too much control): Fought on principle, the minimal tribute of two small bowls is refused. The personality denies any voluntary decrease for physical upkeep or precedent, forcing the nemesis to extract its toll through burnout.
Indulgence (too little control): Indulged, the lake of vision is drained completely. The temptation wins and the vision shrinks to precedent.
Hexagram 41 · Decrease · shared with ENTJ
The classical picture is wind traveling over the earth: a survey that sees everything and touches none of it.
Going well: Handled well, usually late, that distance becomes deliberate. The host holds the tension of the unmade offering, observing quietly and leaving a disharmony unrepaired to teach something.
Exile (too much control): Walled off, the stillness of contemplation is intolerable. The type compulsively makes offerings to appease the group feeling, unable to step back and survey the landscape.
the Grip (too little control): Under stress the buried analysis erupts as a harsh wind in the very circle the type tends. This alienating gaze surveys without sympathy, then recedes and is shut out again.
Hexagram 20 · Contemplation (View) · shared with ESFJ
The classical picture is water flowing through gorge after gorge: repeated danger crossed by keeping your own nature through every one.
Doubled: The function's trigram and the position's trigram are the same here, so the pairing comes in pure form: the recurring trial at its most concentrated. For ESFJ and ENFJ this is the deepest gorge among the sixteen types, and it teaches only by being faced repeatedly.
Going well: Handled well, each hard call is another gorge passed with sincerity intact: the cut made without theater, cold practicality admitted when the cause requires it.
Starvation (too much control): When refused, the type shrinks from the plunge, trying to bridge operational chasms with social warmth until unmet demands drown them.

Hexagram 29 · The Abysmal (Water) · shared with ESFJ
The doubling pattern: One pairing is doubled (function and position share a trigram, the pairing in pure form): hexagram 29, the Abysmal, at the Catalyst position. It represents the recurring hard operational decision that warmth cannot solve. They are warm and articulate everywhere, then episodically pulled down into the deep water that is the type's true teacher.
Light & shadow
The Diplomat gathers people around a shared direction and is better at winning agreement than at testing whether the direction is right. They are more driven to speak than to listen because they have a message to deliver. Their main challenge is whether they can keep saying what the group needs to hear when it costs friendships, and hold a position alone on plain facts when no one agrees. Isolation is their hardest deprivation: they need an audience the way other types need privacy.
Desires
- To get everyone on the same, enlightened page: injustice exposed to the light, barriers broken, the masses persuaded and moving together now.
- Their deeper hunger is the call to immediate impact: connect with the present moment, join the dance of the one true external reality, make an impact of feeling now ('without delay and hesitation').
Fears
- They push away the alternate private experience of reality: traditions and idiosyncratic histories kept up between people are boils covered over, dark depths of prejudice to be lanced and aired.
- Deeper down, the higher rational law under the mission ('the views of your maker'): a fixed doctrinal core the persuasion serves but never audits.
Gifts
- Rallies people into shared effort, and can make non-participation feel like betrayal.
- Shows rivals a frame where they share a side, and sometimes erases real differences too soon.
- Names a hidden problem so it can be addressed, even when the audience is not ready to face it.
- Speaks each audience's language, and can lose track of their own untranslated line.
Struggles
- Oversaturates: too active toward differing views, converts rather than hears them
- Risks crossing from persuasion into propaganda by using audience adaptation to manipulate rather than inform.

The refusal (Si)
The refusal is the body-comfort appetite the public warmth will not credit: the ritual gone rote, the protocol clung to past its season; survived as controlled decrease, not preservation.
The trial (Te)
The trial is the hard operational decision that keeps returning: the budget cut that costs jobs, the alliance that must be broken, the protocol enforced against the community's wish; passed through by sincerity, not avoidance: this recurring trial is the type's most defining growth-engine.
The trap
When group-feeling (Fe) joins present contact (Se) without the long reading (Ni), every crisis gets warmth and motion. Communities get rallied, then abandoned when the next breakthrough calls, and no lasting arc forms.
Under pressure
Campaigns harder: more meetings, more message, more urgency; then primitive Ti (strict definition) erupts as rigid doctrinal hair-splitting or a sudden cold verdict excommunicating the unpersuadable.
Growth
The typical order of development: build the auxiliary, receive the inspiring, contain the nemesis, and engage the trial that matures the primitive. The failure loop runs on rare, extreme contact; growth keeps the contact frequent and mild, so nothing builds up to erupt.
auxiliary: Practice Ni (the long reading) as craft: the long read of each person's arc rather than this week's breakthrough.
inspiring: Let Se (present contact) come as embodied timing, when to push and when to stop, instead of living only in crisis.
nemesis: When Si (the archive) defends comfortable tradition, keep what still serves and lance what covers rot. Scorched-earth contempt for memory helps nobody.
catalyst: Make the Te (execution) operational call (numbers, deadlines, consequences) without losing the warmth that made the community worth keeping.

Chief interest and problem: communication, the universalization of an essentially untranslatable private context. Language and reason become tools for guiding others toward sharing their vision; words are a pointing at what ordinary wording cannot fully convey, and truth is something one sees BY MEANS of language rather than something contained in it. The theocrat begins in the mountains and descends to the city, leading everyone up the pyramid to a shared point of unity.
Flip twin
The Shepherd (ESFJ). Both lead with group-feeling (Fe); the auxiliary swaps the long reading (Ni) for the archive (Si). The same warmth is anchored differently: the Diplomat's care rests on where each person is heading; the Shepherd's on remembered particulars (who needs what, what worked before).
Not to be confused with
- ESFJ: The Diplomat oversaturates through active conversion and the long reading (Ni); the Shepherd overdilutes through passive inclusion and the archive (Si). One leads a movement, while the other keeps a home.
- INFJ: The Diplomat measures success by converts won, while the Hierophant measures success by insights understood.
- ENTJ: Success in persuaded hearts (Fe: popular assent as necessary condition) versus success in changed facts (Te, assent optional).
