Dominant Ti · Auxiliary Ne · Inspiring Si · Primitive Fe
They deny that present contact (Se) can offer anything not already covered by strict definition (Ti): they prize internal consistency over external sensation.
The INTP will not assert what they have not rebuilt from definitions and consistency. Understanding is the point; delivery is optional. The cost is stalling forever on verification, dismissing vivid demonstrations as theater, and sounding cold when people need a human answer first.

A living picture
Past midnight, one lamp, six notebooks. The problem was not assigned by any institution: three unrelated books read in one week shared an assumption none of them defended, and his initial note about it has since filled four notebooks. Tonight the question is whether a weaker assumption does the same conceptual work. He spends forty minutes writing variations on a single paragraph without impatience. By two in the morning, he writes down a consequence that surprises him and underlines it once. He sleeps soundly.
The eight positions
The eight positions show how this type arranges the eight functions: the positions are the same for every type, with a different function in each. Each cell carries its full reading.
The eight positions in one line
Every type fills the same eight positions with the eight functions, one each. The position decides what a function becomes: the dominant runs all day; the auxiliary is the effortful visible skill; the inspiring is hungered for and must be received from outside; the nemesis is met with resentment and contained, not fed; the primitive is taken for granted until it erupts; the catalyst returns every few years as the same lesson in new clothes.
Eight cognitive functions in eight positions. Each pairing is a hexagram: function trigram over position trigram. Each cell carries its full reading; the shared-with label names the other type with the same hexagram. Each pairing can also go wrong in two opposite ways, toward too much control or too little; the readings state both, and the loop between them is on the model page.
The classical picture is wind crossing heaven, one small line restraining five strong ones, clouds gathered with no rain yet: great force held back by small persistent exactness.
Going well: Handled well, every ruling gets tested before it is voiced. The persistent small exactness restrains grand assertion until the claim is actually earned.
Inflation (too much control): Gone rigid, restraint becomes permanent silence: like gathered clouds where the storm never breaks, withheld judgment turns into a fortress.
Abdication (too little control): Overrun, the gentle restraint fails: the small cannot hold back the great, and sweeping declarations claim more than the framework can prove.

☵ over ☲ → ䷾ 既濟 Jì Jì · After CompletionThe system is delivered with its own revision notes. The work ages well because perfect order is treated as the start of inevitable disorder. More often, the draft never closes.
The classical picture is water over fire with every line in its proper place: the meal just cooked and already cooling, completion that will not stay complete.
Going well: Handled well, the work is finished with future decay in mind: delivered with known weaknesses identified, it lasts because perfect order was completed with foresight of the disorder that follows it.
Bolt (too much control): Gone rigid, the finished system overrides its maker. Defended against adjustment and treated as final, its perfect order degrades gradually into the disorder it refused to expect.
Drift (too little control): When the structure goes slack, completion is never permitted: the system stays perpetually in draft because finishing feels like the beginning of decay.

The classical picture is thunder repeated on thunder: shock that tests everything, so what is loose comes apart and what is fixed stands.
Doubled: The function's trigram and the position's trigram are the same here, so the pairing comes in pure form. INTP and INFP adapt through repeated shocks; this fearful but creative shaking is their defining cognitive motion.
Going well: Handled well, shock after shock feeds the framework or the conviction: each new possibility is tested for what survives, while the inner center stays steady.
Wall (too much control): Gone rigid, no shock ever enters: the center freezes into doctrine, sealed against revision.
Counterfeit (too little control): Gone slack, the shocks run without the center: reasoning or conviction scatters into mood, arousal with nothing retained.

☲ over ☶ → ䷷ 旅 Lǚ · The WandererTheir roaming inquiry treats the long reading (Ni) as a temporary guest, using its sudden insights without establishing permanent residence.
The classical picture is fire on the mountain, the traveler's torch: visible from far away, rooted nowhere for long.
Going well: Handled well, the type accepts these converging insights as passing gifts. The long reading provides brief clarifying light, and success comes through smallness by avoiding permanent doctrines.
Understudy (too much control): When neglected, the type treats this stranger with hostility. The clarifying visits of the long reading are banished entirely, leaving their exploration without any sudden focus.
Spill (too little control): Overrun, the wanderer forgets its place and gives itself airs. The tentative insights of the long reading are carelessly broadcast as finished truths, flooding their exploration with unrefined material.

The classical picture is wind blowing low on the mountain, stirring what neglect let spoil: decay that can be repaired because someone finally attends to it.
Going well: Handled well, the call is answered with patient deliberation. They observe the source of the decay before acting, ensuring the repair of neglected habits is thorough and lasting.
Estrangement (too much control): Refused, the call is admired from a distance and never answered. Stagnation remains unstirred, and decay deepens because they avoid the deliberate work of repair.
the Loop (too little control): Fused inward, the wind dies and the mountain hardens into rigid conservatism. Possibility itself is treated as a threat, and maintenance turns into a private routine.

The classical picture is the earth shore leaning down toward the lake: something large approaching slowly, which must be met before it comes in force.
Going well: Handled well, approaching physical impulses are met with an inexhaustible will to teach. Bodily needs are tended and educated rather than obeyed, acknowledged without derailing the day.
Feud (too much control): Starved on principle, the body turns hostile: disembodiment is defended as rigor, and the ignored season turns anyway, physical need forcing its way in.
Indulgence (too little control): Indulged, the approaching sensory escape expands unchecked. Without firm boundaries, bingeing completely overruns the harder conceptual and value work.

The classical picture is the lake gathering over the field: scattered waters collecting into one body.
Going well: Handled well, the gathering is accepted and rituals are attended, offering something that needs no translation into private logic while keeping internal clarity ready to meet the unforeseen.
Exile (too much control): When walled off, they refuse the ritual assembly. The analyst ends the work alone, never allowing the scattered elements to collect into a shared belonging.
the Grip (too little control): Under stress the neglected warmth breaches its banks, overwhelming them with the unforeseen emotional demands of the group and forcing a clumsy, theatrical belonging that violates their own code.
Hexagram 45 · Gathering Together (Massing) · shared with ISTP
The classical picture is heaven rising while water falls away under it: two courses that genuinely cannot meet, managed rather than won.
Going well: Handled well, the conflict is treated as structural: some value-claims cannot be reasoned away. The mature move is outside counsel and a negotiated halt, not total victory for either side.
Starvation (too much control): When rigid, they force the conflict through to a total logical victory, dismissing the felt verdict until their values wither.
the Churn (too little control): Overrun, the conflict never closes: self-litigation is endless, every return brings a fresh crisis of conscience, and no ruling is ever kept.

The doubling pattern: One pairing is doubled (function and position share a trigram, the pairing in pure form), at the auxiliary position: possibility (Ne) as hexagram 51, the Arousing, striking the same question repeatedly until successive revisions refine the framework to the precision the internal model demands.
Light & shadow
The Thinker has been building a private framework for understanding things since childhood, with standards, tests, and rewards that are all internal. They do not believe anything they have not personally verified. The life question: can the framework stay open to revision and in contact with other people, or does it become a closed system the Thinker lives inside at the cost of relationships and the body?
Desires
- To find principles that hold across every context and to have thought everything through for themselves ('reading furnishes only materials; thinking makes what we read ours', Locke).
- Their deeper hunger is the longed-for inner assurance of reality: stability, certainty, the hushed library; skepticism is the means, and the peace of Si (the archive) the never-coming end.
Fears
- They push away the tyranny of the present and the immediate spectacle: 'colored lights can hypnotize'; nothing the moment offers isn't already covered (or coverable) by the laws; despotic 'because I said so' and flashy demonstration alike are infantile.
- Deeper down, the unconscious beginning and end of the logic is harmony. If everyone thought clearly, all cogs would mesh with Reason's central wheel; disharmony is the ego's failure to access Reason (hence their strange faith that a good argument should reconcile everyone).
Gifts
- Builds systems that survive edge cases, and may never finish the usable version.
- Moves a problem onto the plane where its structure shows, and can ignore the human plane too long.
- Waits for evidence rather than rushing a vivid demo, and can miss a window that will not reopen.
- Stays cool in heated argument. When warmth is needed, the coolness reads as inhuman.
Struggles
- The inspiring function (Si's inner assurance) is sabotaged by the higher functions: inner peace forever conditioned on more rationality
- Detaches from practical competition, observing the contest rather than taking part.
- Pursuing pure form approaches tautology, as stripping away all contingency empties the thought of content.
- Forgets they are moved by feelings: defends axioms with irritation, anxiety, and evident self-interest
- Ungrounded, prone to nihilism: 'a certain nothing to lie down on, and die' (Nietzsche)
The refusal (Se)
The refusal is the sensory-now appetite the abstract reasoner will not credit: the binge, the game, the scrolling, the unmeasured immersion in present sensation; survived, not integrated.
The trial (Fi)
The trial is the recurrent moral disagreement, when felt-conviction collides with rational conclusion; each trial honestly faced refines both the value and the system, until interior code and interior logic are no longer separable.
The trap
When strict definition (Ti) loops into the archive (Si) without the fresh cases of possibility (Ne), the framework becomes a sealed museum that accepts new evidence only if it fits and dismisses the rest of the world as already understood.
Under pressure
Retreats up the abstraction ladder; postpones all action pending further analysis; then primitive Fe (group-feeling) erupts as clumsy appeasement, sudden desperate need to be liked, or wounded outbursts about being disrespected.
Growth
The typical order of development: build the auxiliary, receive the inspiring, contain the nemesis, and engage the trial that matures the primitive. The failure loop runs on rare, extreme contact; growth keeps the contact frequent and mild, so nothing builds up to erupt.

auxiliary: Practice Ne (possibility) as craft: new cases that can break the framework, on purpose.

inspiring: Let Si (the archive) come as an outside discipline of upkeep and precedent, the body of the work.

nemesis: When Se (present contact) dazzles with demos and presence, take the data and refuse to let spectacle replace verification. Contempt for the present is not rigor.

catalyst: Say Fi (private conviction) out loud: what you want and love, as yours, not as a theorem.
Spotting
In the room
- Reads and thinks for pleasure at volumes others find alarming
- Corrects the framing of questions before answering them
- Postpones practical demands while administrative tasks pile up
- Builds private taxonomies, glossaries, and notation systems
- Avoids events centered on spectacle, small talk, or physical display
Sounds like
- 'Why though?', 'define that', 'across contexts?', 'in principle'
- Long conditional chains ('if… then… unless…') spoken casually
- Reformulates common sayings into 'the precise version'
- Hedged assertion with confident structure
- References to the literature over the incident at hand
Says
- “Before we answer, is the question even well-formed?”
- “It works, sure, but why it works is what matters, and no one here knows.”
- “'Because I said so' is not a reason; it's a confession you don't have one.”
- “Give me a week with the problem before the meeting.”
- “The demo is impressive. Impressive isn't true.”
Questions that find this type
- Ask them to justify a rule they follow: expect a first-principles reconstruction or an admission they should abandon it.
- Interrupt with 'but does it work in practice?': expect visible lower priority given to practice than to validity.
- Ask about feelings in decisions: expect them reclassified as data or noise, followed by unease.
Does this sound like you?
- “I build the framework until it holds: understanding is the point; applying it is optional.”signature
- “New connections feed the system: every stray idea gets tested for whether the system can rest on it.”auxiliary
- “The flashy demo and the commanding presence prove nothing; spectacle is not evidence.”refusal
- “My recurring lesson: saying what I actually want and love, out loud, as mine.”trial

Democratic temperament · shared with Shepherd, Conscience, Devil's Advocate
Opposed to the monarchic in every essential way: they revolve around the universe. Criteria for truth and value are drawn not from their own needs but from everyone else's; they assume an Archimedean perch outside the chaos, where the whole issue can be considered calmly and all at once. The many rule them: they do not rule the many.
Flip twin
The Monk (ISTP). Both lead with strict definition (Ti); the auxiliary swaps possibility (Ne) for present contact (Se). Both build the same kind of inner rulebook; the Thinker tests it against imagined cases, the Monk against the real work of the hands.
Not to be confused with
- ISTP: Both Ti-dominant; the Thinker builds laws robust across every context, roving with Ne (possibility), deferring the field-test; the Monk embodies one principle in the body's real-time context (Se aux), field-testing daily and distrusting elaborated systems.
- INTJ: The Thinker builds conceptual frameworks and is indifferent to implementation. The Alchemist works linearly toward a specific outcome, defined by executing a single vision.
- ENTP: Questions serving laws (Thinker) versus laws serving questions (Devil's Advocate); the Thinker wants the ark finished, the Advocate wants the trial continued.
Company
- Baruch Spinoza: The Ethics in geometrical order: the interior framework built in small steady increments across years until a careful reader can climb inside it; lens-grinding as the minimal floor of the contemplative life.
- Ludwig Wittgenstein: Two frameworks in one life: the early system, the long withdrawal to village schoolteaching, and the return to amend his own foundational commitment, the framework arguing with itself at the scale of a career.
- Marie Curie: Framework-building in scientific form under conditions most lives would collapse inside; the late choice to lend it to field-hospital X-ray vans, the framework's felt commitments finally credited at operational scale.
